Experience Winneburg in 3D

Winneburg Castle was built in 1240. 780 years later, a new app makes it almost completely visible again at the authentic site.

For “ARGO – Augmented Archaelogy”, buildings that have long since disappeared were reconstructed in three dimensions. On site, the graphics on smartphone or tablet merge with reality and make history tangible in a special way.

Argo is a new tourist information system: an app that allows you to see buildings that have long since disappeared in their original location, right where they once stood. At 110 locations in Rhineland-Palatinate and Luxembourg. From the Celtic refuge to the Roman street settlement to the medieval fortress. With the app, reconstructed three-dimensional representations of the buildings appear in their original state.

The handling is very simple: You download the app onto your smartphone. After that, the 3D view of the Winneburg and the other objects is available completely independently of the Internet.

The app works as follows: The GPS module in the mobile device tells the app where you are. If you are standing in front of the object, the corresponding data is retrieved. The compass in the mobile device reveals the exact compass direction in which the visitor is facing and the object is rotated accordingly.

A map provides an overview of all modeled objects from ancient, Roman and medieval times. A navigation is also built in – so you can plan your trip. You can also download the app spontaneously to your smartphone or tablet on site, and then discover the full-size 3D models on the spot.

The free ARGO app is available for download from Google Play and the App Store. Visit www.ar-route.de for more information about the project.
